I’m sure you heard that catch phrase going
around; ‘ Saturdays are for weddings’ . Well,
it’s very true in Nigeria. Almost every weekend,
there is a one huge society wedding or the
other.
The Agbada has been a staple at ‘Owambe’
parties, especially weddings in Nigeria. It stems
from the Yoruba culture of Nigeria and it
comprises of a tunic top (buba) paired with
pants (sokoto), with a oversize, usually floor
length, ‘Danshiki’ (Agbada).
The oversize ‘Danshiki’ is usually covered in
elegant embroidery at the top for a grand
effect. The style was mostly worn by rich elites
and was made from ‘Aso oke’ originally but
today, it is quite common and can be made with
a range of fabrics from ‘Aso oke’ to ‘Atiku’, lace
and ‘Damask’.
These days, young men, be it grooms or friends
of grooms or just the everyday man, are
recreating the traditional style to fit the modern
times, with variations such as the cropped
Agbada and the ‘smarter junior brother’ to the
agbada, ‘Danshiki’, being worn a lot.
Check out these modern trends and try out one
or two to match the ladies at that cool party
this weekend.
