In a remarkable move, the prestigious award
was presented posthumously to the victims of
the tragedy, as well as key figures in the
decades-long campaign.
Councillors formally agreed to bestow the
honour with a unanimous vote at a meeting of
the full council at the city's town hall today,
the Liverpool Echo reports.
As well as the men, women and children who
died after the disaster on April 15, 1989, a
motion by city Mayor Joe Anderson asked
members of the local authority to make the
award to former Bishop of Liverpool, The
Right Reverend James Jones, Professor Phil
Scraton and Kenny and Marina Dalglish.
